But how would he tell them the length of the frame? He can do that if he knows the length in a certain unit, say 3 feet. Length<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">We can measure the length of an object by using different units like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/meter-m\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">meter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/centimeter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">centimeters<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/foot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">feet<\/a>, <a measure length into two types:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"2-1-non-standard-units-of-measuring-length\">1. Non-standard units of measuring length<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The non standard units do not have any fixed measurement in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/number-sense\/number\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">numbers<\/a>. The measurements vary from person to person and object to object.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">For example, a kid and his father are measuring a painting using their hands. So, the length they will get will be different because the handspan of a kid is usually smaller than that of an adult. Some of the non-standard units of length are handspan, foot span, finger width, a thread or a rope, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"3-a-handspan\">A. Handspan<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">Handspan is the maximum distance between the tips of the thumb and the little finger. Suppose, there are two people measuring the length of a pencil with a ruler. If they use the standard units, they will get the same value.&nbsp; Some examples of measurement of length using standard units are centimeters, meters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/kilometer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">kilometers<\/a>, inches, feet, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/yard\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">yards<\/a>, etc.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">We can divide the standard units of measuring length into two types:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading eplus-wrapper\" id=\"6-a-metric-system\">A. Metric System<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\" eplus-wrapper\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/geometry\/metric-system\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">metric system<\/a> includes kilometer, hectometer, decameter, meter, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/decimeter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">decimeter<\/a>, centimeter, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.splashlearn.com\/math-vocabulary\/measurements\/millimeter-mm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">millimeter<\/a>. There is a relationship between these units. The base unit is meters.
