Subtract by Breaking up Hundreds

- Grade 2 Math

Practice subtracting numbers within 1000 with carry at the tens place. While subtracting numbers using place value concepts, students subtract ones from ones, tens from tens and hundreds from hundreds. In this method, sometimes it is necessary to break up hundreds into tens.

For example, the subtraction 353 - 162 can be viewed as:

  3 hundreds 5 tens 3 ones
- 1 hundred  6 tens  2 ones

We can write 3 hundreds and 5 tens in 353 as 2 hundreds and 15 tens, which makes it simpler to subtract, as shown below:

   2 hundreds 15 tens 3 ones
-  1 hundred  6 tens  2 ones
   1 hundred   9 tens  1 one

Subtract by Breaking up Hundreds Worksheet focuses on problems with such situations, where it is necessary to break up hundreds as tens. This concept is the precursor to the concept of carry in the standard algorithm.

2.NBT.7Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three-digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
