By now, fifth graders are familiar with the different metric units of measurement and the relationship between them. It is now time to put all of that knowledge to action. This cool unit conversion game helps children relate different metric units numerically and practice measurement conversion in a fun and engaging manner.

What’s inside?

- Begin by converting smaller units to the corresponding bigger units, and bigger units to the corresponding smaller units. For example, learn to convert kilograms to grams, and grams to  kilograms.

- Apply the knowledge of basic multiplication and division to convert a given quantity of a unit to another unit.

Real-World Application

Imagine a world without any measuring units. Wouldn’t such a place be very imprecise? Measuring units are used in all spheres of life. We use kilometer/hour (or miles/hour, depending on which country we are in) to measure the speed of a car; grams, kilograms or pounds to measure flour or sugar; or litres to measure milk . Introducing children to the concept of measurement prepares them to bring home the right quantity of sugar and, who knows, launch America’s next space shuttle!

What’s next?

This game sets the base for students to proceed on to more complex conversions – decimal conversions and conversion of customary units and conversion word problems.
