Starting with U

The letter U is simple in its form, and it is largely the same in both capital and lowercase. There are three sounds of the letter U, but your preschooler only needs to learn the short vowel sound to start with.

The letter U isn’t hard to identify or write. Tracing practice can help your kids form firmer strokes and make neater curves. Don’t be surprised if your preschooler sometimes confuses the lower-case u with n – they are mirrors of one another. It may be more common while writing than reading.

The best way to get your child starting on the sound is using words. It may confuse your preschooler to make the association since the letter name U is also a complete word. Begin with words like ‘up’ and ‘umbrella’ that starts with the ‘uh’ sound. It will help them make the connection. Your child may require lots of practice, but that’s where online games and interactive tools come in handy.

A great way to show consistency in letter and sound is by lining up a series of words that follow the same pattern – dug, mug, rug, lug, tug. Write these or show them one below the other, focusing mainly on the ‘uh’ sound. Repetition always helps.
