The fact that children learn better through music and sound is proven. That’s probably why children also love poetry. Rhyming sounds are very attractive to children. There is a strong reason that we focus heavily on teaching through rhymes.

Rhyming words can help children understand and practice repeated patterns of sounds. It is also an excellent way for them to learn sound patterns and spell correctly. Helping your child learn through rhyming sounds and words can help accelerate their learning.

Rhyming words essentially group words into similar sound patterns. Forming rhyming groups can help your kids learn and practice various sounds and spellings. Take the group of ‘st’ rhyming words. You have ‘nest,’ ‘best,’ ‘rest,’ ‘test’ and all these words get learned at one go. By the end of it, your child will be a spelling and rhyming whizz!

Words rhyme in two ways – you can have words with an end rhyming pattern like the set we have shown you above, or rhyming words that start with a similar sound – like ‘dr.’ You can use the words like drip, drop and drum as they all have the rhyming ‘dr’ sound.

If your child is comfortable with blends and digraphs, you can move on to rhyming trigraphs with your second grader. You can even bring in more complex sounds like ‘ight’ and ‘atch.’ While they may look intimidating, playing engaging games on SplashLearn can aid an interactive learning process.
