Grade 2 math addition objectives

Mathematically proficient students in Second Grade examine problems and tasks, can make sense of the meaning of the task and find an entry point or a way to start the task. Second Grade students also develop a foundation for problem solving strategies and become independently proficient on using those strategies to solve new tasks.

Grade 2 students model real-life mathematical situations with a number sentence or an equation, and check to make sure that their equation accurately matches the problem context. Second Grade students use concrete manipulatives and pictorial representations to provide further explanation of the equation.

Students extend their understanding of the base-ten system. This includes ideas of counting in fives, tens, and multiples of hundreds, tens, and ones, as well as number relationships involving these units, including comparing.

Students understand multi-digit numbers (up to 1000) written in base-ten notation, recognizing that the digits in each place represent amounts of thousands, hundreds, tens, or ones (e.g., 853 is 8 hundreds + 5 tens + 3 ones).

Addition problem : Simple everyday math tricks

A math equation is basically a math sentence. An equation is filled with numbers and math symbols instead of words. When equations are written in addition, two math symbols, + and = are put into usage.

A + B = C

The plus sign (+) indicated the two numbers that are to be summed. The two or three numbers are also called the addends that are to be added.

The other math symbol used in the addition equation is the equal to sign (=). This symbol denotes that the

The other symbol in our equation is the equals sign (=). When you see the equals sign in an equation, it means two are more things are equal, or equivalent. Things that are equivalent don't always look or seem exactly alike, but they mean the same thing.

When addition of any two numbers is performed, it is done by counting them together, as one larger value.

Addition word problems

In grade 2 math, the child will learn more about addition word problems. Extending their previous knowledge from 20 to solving word problems within 100.

In 2 grade math addition, the child gains proficiency in solving one or two-step word problems of all three types with result unknown, change unknown and start unknown.

a.) One step addition word problem

1. Alison had 20 candies in her basket. While she was moving through the department store Robin added some more candies in the basket when Alison was looking on the other side. When Alison reached the cash counter to checkout, she was surprised to see that there were 32 candies in her basket.

How many candies did Robin add? Solve this double digit addition problem.

 

                                                   20 +    = 32

 This math puzzle is based on change unknown word problem.

 

2. There were some children sitting in a classroom. 5 more students entered just before the teacher came. When the teacher took the attendance, there were 13 children in total sitting in the classroom. How many children were there at first? (In this math puzzle, the start is unknown)

                                                         +  5  =  13

b.) Two step addition word problem

Carol went to the nearby bakery to get some muffins. She took 5 blueberry muffins; 7 vanilla muffins for herself and the family; but her brother insisted on buying 10 Choco-chip muffins too for himself.

How many muffins did Carol final bought? Find the solution by adding numbers.

 

                                                   5 + 7 + 10  = 

 

 In this addition problem, the result is unknown.

Furthermore, in grade 2 math, the two-step problems mostly focus on single-digit addends since the primary focus is the problem-type.

Teaching / Learning Manipulatives

 

1. Math Aids:  Ten Frame- Math Addition

 

A ten frame is a simple math aid that can help a child to:

• Keep track of counting
• Learn to add up to 10
• Understand place value
• By using 2 two frames, learning can be extended to add up to number 20

 

Ten frames can also be used to differentiate between even and odd numbers.

           

Adding numbers greater than 20.

 

Use circular magnets, circular cards or ten-frame mathematical toys or Lego toys to count and add numbers.

 

 

 

 

2 grade students extend their base-ten understanding to hundreds as they view 10 tens as a unit called a “hundred”. They use manipulative materials and pictorial representations to help make a connection between the written three-digit numbers and hundreds, tens, and ones.

 

2.  Math Aid: Place Value Materials (groupable and pre-grouped)

 

The simplest method to define the place values at this level is to make group of blocks to represent hundred’s, ten’s and one’s place. Children can count the number of blocks required to get to a particular value. These are also known as place value blocks. Here the total number of one’s blocks when exceed 9, it becomes equivalent to one ten’s block. If total number of ten’s blocks becomes more than 9, then it is also equivalent to one hundred’s block. Thus, at the end, the total number of hundred’s block also cannot exceed 9.

 

 

 

 

 

 

For example, number 356 will require 3 blocks of hundred, 5 blocks of tens and 6 blocks of ones. this concept is suitable for both 2 digit addition with regrouping and 3 digit addition with regrouping. 

3 digit addition with regrouping using unit cubes 

Children need to see exactly why regrouping is necessary. imagine the sum of 246 + 168. we begin with adding the numbers according to their place values, it can thus be written as 3-10-14, where 3 represents the sum of the hundreds, 10 represents the sum of the tens, and 14 represents the sum of the ones. here as defined above, when a column has more than 10 blocks, such as in the one’s column and ten’s column in the example, 10 of the blocks in each column are changed to a ten block or hundred blocks and placed in the column on the left. this is known as regrouping.

Mental Math : Fluently add within 20 using mental strategies

Mental math strategies used are :  

• Counting with fingers : for example, 8+4, start with 8 and count 4 more with fingers, answer is 12.
• Making ten: for example, 7+5 = 7+3+2 = 10+2 = 12
• Working with known sums: for example, 7+9 = 7+7 +2 = 14 + 2 = 16, here (7+7) is known and easier to remember.

 

Recognizing new terms

• In 2nd grade math, children learn to use math symbols and terms such as odd, even, row, column, rectangular array, equal, addend.
• Start by determining whether a group of objects (1-20) has an odd or even number of members, e.g., by pairing objects or counting them by 2s; write an equation to express an even number as a sum of two equal addends.
• If a number can be broken apart into two equal addends or doubles addition facts (e.g., 10 = 5 +5), then that number (10 in this case) is an even number.

Example: Determining whether 6 is an even number or odd number.

1. We can use buttons as math aids for problem solving. Start grouping them in pairs, if there is no single button left, then the number is even.  

1. We can try and break the number into two equal numbers. We can use buttons for this also. Let’s use the same example, number 6.

1. Determine the even or odd number by drawing rectangular boxes. If every box on the right matches a box on the left then the number is even.  We can use buttons again.

 

Since none of the button is left unpaired, this means that 6 is an even number.

An even number is an amount that can be made of two equal parts with no leftovers. An odd number is one that is not even or cannot be made of two equal parts.

 

Math education games, puzzles and worksheets: Simple Addition Problems

1. Ten’s frame number cards: Addition flash cards

• Make rectangular ten frame cards and distribute amongst the kids.
• Give each student 15-20 plastic coins or small circular discs that fits into the spacing drawn on the ten’s frame.
• Take a box with many balls. All these balls carry numbers 0-20.
• One by one pick a ball; ask the students to read out the number aloud. Then using the plastic coins arrange the number on the ten’s frame.
• In the meanwhile, take out another ball. Ask the students to add this number to the previous number using ten’s frame addition.
• Tell them to sum the numbers and give the answer.
• The children will also learn simple math trick that adding 0 to a number will result in the same number.  

 

 

 

 

 

 

2. Addition puzzle: learn to add up to 20

• cut out equal sized rectangular colored strips. And write an addition problem, summing two numbers on it as seen in the picture.
• Now take a white cardboard sheet and draw out ten’s frames on it.

3. Finding the missing addend

This missing addend worksheets can be solved by using the counting trick.

Look at the number given in the first ten’s frame.

Now use colorful stickers and start counting from that number while pasting the stickers in the blocks provided in the second ten’s frame.

4. Addition buddies: 3 digit addition with regrouping

This activity makes use of place value blocks in adding three digit numbers. in the game, there are three place values buddies names Hundrion, Tenous and Uno representing the hundred’s column, ten’s column and one’s column. the child has to place the blocks of appropriate number in the box provided.  then add the numbers togethers and place the equal number of blocks in the third box.

The moment number of Tenous becomes more than 9 in a same box, it will club together and change into a Hundrion. also, if number of Uno’s in a box exceeds 9 then in its place Tenuos will appear.

5. Math educational game: Adding 2 digit numbers

Look at the numbers written below the rectangular mesh.

Arrange the number in red using red dots in tens frames. The addend is given in blue color. Use blue dots to arrange the addend on the ten’s frame in continuation of the previous number. Then count the number of ten’s frames filled and remaining dots. Calculate the sum and write it in the empty box provided.

For example, 46+36

Total number of ten’s frames completely filled = 8; total = 80

Number of dots in the remaining frame = 2
