What Is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole which is equally divided into different parts. 

A fraction has two parts - numerator and denominator. Numerator is the number written at the top. It represents the number of parts taken from the whole. Denominator is the number written at the bottom. It represents the total number of equal parts the whole is equally divided into. The line that separates the numerator and the denominator is called a fraction bar.

Example: If you divide a whole pizza into 8 equal slices, each slice will represent 1 part out of 8 equal parts. It is represented by the fraction \(\frac{1}{8}\). Similarly, two slices are represented by the fraction \(\frac{2}{8}\);  three slices are represented by the fraction \(\frac{3}{8}\), and so on.

Whole Numbers as Fractions

Whole numbers can be represented as fractions by placing them over the denominator of one. For example, the whole number 3 can be written as \(\frac{3}{1}\), where 3 is the numerator and 1 is the denominator. 

This concept helps in understanding that every whole number is also a fraction with a denominator of 1. Fractions are a way to express parts of a whole, and when the whole is equal to one, it results in whole numbers as fractions.
 

Each of the circles is represented as \(\frac{1}{1}\) and there are 3 such whole objects. Thus, the fraction represented here is \(\frac{3}{1}\).

Types of Fractions

I. Proper Fractions: These are fractions in which the numerator (the top number) is smaller than the denominator (the bottom number). For example, \(\frac{1}{6}\), \(\frac{6}{11}\), etc.

II. Improper Fractions: These are fractions in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator. For example, \(\frac{5}{2}\), \(\frac{7}{5}\), etc.

III. Mixed Numbers or Mixed Fractions: A mixed number consists of a whole number and a proper fraction. They have an integer part and a fractional part. For example, \(1\;\frac{1}{4}\) , \(2\;\frac{1}{3}\), etc.

IV. Equivalent Fractions: Fractions that appear different but have the exact same value are known as equivalent fractions. They have different numerators and denominators but represent the same value. Equivalent fractions have exactly the same size.

V. Like Fractions (Fractions with Same Denominators): Two fractions are said to be like fractions if they have the same denominators. For instance,  \(\frac{3}{8}\) and \(\frac{2}{8}\) are like fractions.

VI. Unlike Fractions (Fractions with Different Denominators): Two fractions are said to be like fractions if they have different denominators. For instance,  \(\frac{2}{7}\) and \(\frac{3}{4}\) are unlike fractions.

VII. Unit Fractions: Unit fractions are fractions whose numerator is 1. When comparing two unit fractions, the fraction with the greater denominator is the smaller fraction. For example, \(\frac{1}{2}\), \(\frac{1}{6}\), \(\frac{1}{63}\), etc. are unit fractions. 

How To Compare Fractions

Understanding how to compare fractions is essential for later stages when ordering fractions. Comparing two fractions involves using the symbols <, >, or =.

• Comparing Fractions with the same Denominator: When comparing fractions with the same denominator, simply compare the numerators to determine which fraction is greater.

Example: \(\frac{2}{5}\) < \(\frac{4}{5}\) since 2 < 4

• Comparing Fractions with the Different Denominators: To compare fractions with different denominators, we can use different methods. The visual method is the simplest way to introduce to grade 3 children.

Example: \(\frac{1}{2}\) and \(\frac{1}{4}\)

In the first square, one part of two equal parts is shaded to represent \(\frac{1}{2}\).

In the second square, one part of four equal parts is shaded to represent \(\frac{1}{4}\).

The shaded region of the first square is more than that of the second one. 

Thus, \(\frac{1}{2}\) > \(\frac{1}{4}\)

• Fractions with the same numerator but different denominators: Such fractions can also be compared by observing the size of the parts in a visual representation. In general, when fractions with same numerators are compared, the fraction with a larger denominator is smaller than that with a smaller one.

Example: \(\frac{1}{2}\) > \(\frac{1}{4}\) since 2 < 4

\(\frac{2}{5}\) > \(\frac{2}{9}\) since 5 < 9

• Equivalent fractions have the same size and are represented with the equality symbol =.

Example: \(\frac{1}{6}\) = \(\frac{2}{12}\) = \(\frac{4}{24}\)
