What Is a Fraction?

A fraction represents a part of a whole. For example, if you divide a whole pizza into 4 equal parts, then each part represents the fraction \( \frac{1}{4} \); 3 slices out of 4 represent the fraction \( \frac{3}{4} \).

Numerator and denominator are two parts of a fraction. Numerator is the number written on the top, which represents the number of parts taken out of the whole. The number on the bottom is called the denominator and it represents the total number of equal parts the whole is divided into.

In the first circle,  the whole portion is shaded. Thus, it represents a whole. 

In the second circle, the shaded portion represents half of the whole portion, that is \( \frac{1}{2} \).

Types of Fractions

I. Proper Fractions: These are fractions in which the numerator (the top number) is smaller than the denominator (the bottom number). For example, \( \frac{1}{3} \), \( \frac{2}{5} \), etc.

II. Improper Fractions: These are fractions in which the numerator is greater than or equal to the denominator. For example, \( \frac{5}{4} \), \( \frac{7}{3} \), etc.

III. Mixed Numbers or Mixed fractions: A mixed number consists of a whole number and a proper fraction. They have an integer part and a fractional part. For example, \( 2\; \frac{1}{4} \), \( 3\; \frac{1}{3} \), etc.

IV. Equivalent Fractions: Fractions which appear different but have the exact same value are known as equivalent fractions. They have different numerators and denominators but represent the same value.

How to find equivalent fractions? Multiplying the numerator and denominator with the same number does not change the value of the fraction but creates an equivalent fraction.

Example: \( 2 \frac{1}{3} \)

Whole number = 2, Numerator = 1, Denominator = 3

How to Convert Improper Fractions to Mixed Numbers

To convert an improper fraction to a mixed number, divide the numerator by the denominator using the long division method. The quotient represents the whole number part of the mixed number, remainder represents the numerator, and the denominator stays the same. 

Example: \( \frac{11}{4} \)

Here are the key operations you need to know:

Adding Fractions

To add fractions, they must have the same denominator.

• Adding fractions with the same denominator: Simply add the numerators keeping the same denominator.

Example:  \( \frac{1}{4} \;+\; \frac{2}{4} = \frac{1 \;+\; 2}{4} = \frac{3}{4} \)

• Adding fractions with the different denominators: If the denominators are different, find the least common denominator (LCD), which is simply the LCM of the denominators.

Convert the fractions into their equivalent fractions with the LCD as the common denominator.

Once the denominators are the same, add the numerators together and keep the denominator the same. Simplify the resulting fraction, if needed.

Subtracting Fractions

To subtract fractions, they must have the same denominator.

• Subtracting fractions with the same denominator: Simply subtract the numerators, keeping the same denominator.

Example:

 \( \frac{5}{7} \;-\; \frac{2}{7} = \frac{5 \;-\; 2}{7} = \frac{3}{7} \)

• Subtracting fractions with the same denominators: If the denominators are different, find the least common denominator (LCD), which is the LCM of the denominators. Convert the fractions into their equivalent fractions with the LCD as the common denominator.

Once the denominators are the same, subtract the numerators and keep the denominator the same. Simplify the resulting fraction, if necessary.

Multiplying Fractions

To multiply fractions, multiply the numerators separately, multiply the denominators separately. Simplify the resulting fraction, if possible, by canceling out common factors.

Example 1: \( \frac{8}{9} \;×\; \frac{6}{5} = \frac{8 \;×\; 6}{9 \;×\; 5} = \frac{48}{45} = \frac{16}{15} \)

The multiplication of two fractions can be modeled by fractional strips as shown:

• Multiplying fractions with whole numbers: Multiplying fractions with whole numbers follows the same process as repeated addition. We add the fraction the same number of times as the whole number. Another way is to convert the whole number into a fraction form by writing the denominator as 1. Multiply the two fractions as discussed above.

Example: \( \frac{8}{9} \;×\; 2 = \frac{8}{9} \;+\; \frac{8}{9} = \frac{8 \;+\; 8}{9} = \frac{16}{9} \)

Or \( \frac{8}{9} \;×\; 2 = \frac{8}{9} \;×\; \frac{2}{1} = \frac{8 \;×\; 2}{9 \;×\; 1} = \frac{16}{9} \)

• Multiplying fractions with mixed numbers: Convert the mixed numbers into improper fractions. Multiply the given fraction with the resulting important fraction to find the answer.

Example: \( \frac{2}{5} \;×\; 2 \frac{1}{3} \)

Here, \( 2 \frac{1}{3} = \frac{(3 \;×\; 2) \;+\; 1}{3} = \frac{7}{3} \)

Thus, \( \frac{2}{5} \;×\; 2 \frac{1}{3} = \frac{2}{5} \;×\; \frac{7}{3} = \frac{14}{15} \)

Dividing Fractions

To divide a fraction by another fraction, multiply the first fraction by the reciprocal of the second fraction, using the same steps discussed for the multiplication. Simplify the resulting fraction, if necessary.

To find the reciprocal of a fraction, simply flip the second fraction (interchange the values of the numerator and the denominator).

• Dividing Whole Numbers by Fractions: Here, multiply the whole number by the reciprocal of the fraction.
