Writing Sight Words
Sugar and spice, and all that’s nice – that’s what the letter ‘S’ is all about.
Helping your child learn the letter S can be as much fun or as intimidating as you would like it to be. Children have a natural liking for things that challenge and excite them, and there is so much scope for it all to happen with this letter!
SplashLearn helps you build strength and success, all using the power of ‘S.’ Learn more about SplashLearn’s learning tools and online educational games for children.
Unleashing the Magic of ‘S’
What a powerful letter ‘S’ is! It can change anything it wants. Imagine a large mall becoming ‘small,’ a male changing from ‘he’ to ‘she,’ or an ‘elf’ becoming, well, your own ‘self’!
We help create some similar magic with these incredible letter S games that help your child’s world come alive.
- See me!: Pick a scenery, ideally one on the beach – it has so much of the sea! Show your child the picture and ask them to name the things they see. They must stop and clap each time they spot something that starts with the letter ‘s.’ Remember to quickly write these words down and read each word aloud so your child can learn visually and phonetically.
- Sticky ‘S’: This is a great way to build familiarity with the formation. Take several things starting with the letter S – some sand, salt, stars, sugar, and straw. Now get out a large stencil of the letter ‘S’ on a sheet of paper. Ask your child to name everything, and tell them that they will ‘stick’(notice the ‘s’ here too!) on the ‘S.’ Bring in some other elements like glitter, confetti, and googly eyes. Tell your child that they need to fill in the ‘S,’ but only with things that start with the letter. They need to sort, pick, and STICK!
- Tongue twisters: The sound of ‘S’ through repetition can work well. Pick simple tongue twisters with the letter and have a laugh! Some of them are: See Sam Swim; selfish shellfish; silly sick sticks.
- Fun in the Sun: Take a child to the park, and they’re in heaven! A park can also be a great learning ground. Tell your child that for the day, he can only do ‘S’ tasks. Call out a task, and they can only play it if it starts with ‘S.’ Examples include slide, swing, skip (try getting them to sing in the outdoors!) It’s a whole lot of fun learning things outside.
The How and When of Teaching ‘S’
‘S’ is among the first sounds that you can use to teach and practice. This is among the most familiar sounds. In introducing the concept of ‘S’:
- Begin by showing the letter S. A visual cue is always a powerful tool for recall.
- Talk about its sound. Make actions to show how the sound of the slippery, slithery snake is much like the curvy ‘S.’
- Now make a connection using words. Show some pictures on the same page as the letter ‘S’ to help build the connection.
- Check understanding at this stage, and repeat the idea frequently till your child is comfortable.
- You are now ready for game time!
Supporting your learner with the letter ‘S’
Can you imagine your life without love and support? There is no age, grade, or stage where a child stops needing love and encouragement. It’s important to share this even as they learn their letters and sounds.
- It may take a while for them to understand the concept. It may seem like a common sound to you, but to them, it’s a huge uphill task. Be patient.
- They may make errors frequently and get it wrong for days on end. Motivate them.
- They may lose interest and want to stop, especially if it is a challenge. Encourage them.
- They will want you at all stages of the journey, whether to help them or celebrate their victories. Love them.
