Writing Sight Words
The Sound of Two Letters: WH
The individual sound of W is “vuh'' as in way while H is “huh.” However, when these sounds come together, they make the “wha” sound. /WH/ is a windy sound where the wind is blown out of your mouth while puffing out the cheeks.
Mostly, this sound is only found at the start of the word. A few examples of this sound are:
- Wheel
- What
- When
- Whip
- Whale
- Wheat
- White
Learning the Grapheme
In the WH grapheme (the combination of letters), the sound /wh/ gives the same sound as/w/. For /h/, the sound is unvoiced. The lips are pursed and push the air forward. To best understand the sound, kindergarten-grade kids can be shown to blow a candle. However, the pronunciation of different words with similar sounds must also be put forward, for example, whole and hole.
Teaching in interactive ways can help kids remember the sound rather than memorize the words. Introducing them to online educational games on SplashLearn can bring about a great change in their learning.
With the abundant presence of words in the normal text, you can help them have fun while playing games on SplashLearn that will clearly distinguish sounds in different words without confusing them with similar sounds. Also, these games are curriculum-aligned and follow the Common Core Standards.
