LT Blend Games for 1st Graders

First grade seems like such a difficult place to be – so many new words, sounds, and concepts being thrown in at once. However, if you have been consistent and systematic with your kids, you will notice that none of the sounds and words are too difficult for them. We are here to help take you through how you can make the ‘LT’ sound simpler and more fun.

Making LT Blends Child’s Play

The key is to take it step-by-step. You must ensure that your child knows and can apply the various letter sounds to CVC words and read them adequately.

• Step 1: At this stage, you are only introducing them to the blend. A good way to start is by showing them ‘LT’ blended words, so they appreciate the repetition of the sound. Now sound it out for them yourself, and have them repeat it after you. At each stage, ensure you show them the words and the repeated ‘LT’ pattern.
  (Tip: If you have an intelligent learner, ask them to guess what’s common among all the words before you give them any hints)

• Step 2: This is when they can work with sorting the ‘LT’ blends from others. A great way to manage this learning is through interactive online games on SplashLearn that make this otherwise dreary process very engaging.

• Step 3: If your child has gone through these stages with little difficulty, you can now bring in word sounds and get your child to listen carefully to the vowel sound before the blend. You can even call out the blend and ask your child to identify the vowel sound from their memory.

•  Step 4: For children who are really quick learners, you can bring in the remaining vowel sounds as well. Ensure there is a lot of practice that involves both sight and sound simultaneously.
