Ask your kids to touch their tongues to the flat top or upper curve inside their mouths; then ask them to slightly vibrate their tone and make an ‘ss’ sound, which will make the ‘zz’ sound.
Learning the ZZ digraph can be a lot of fun for kids, who are already excited about learning new words. The consonant pair ZZ forms the end of many fun words in the English language, such as buzz, frizz, fuzz, and even forms the middle of some words like pizza and dizzy.
One of the best ways to learn zz words is through objects. For example, point at a slice of pizza and get kids to say what the object is. From the word, ask them to single out each of the letters and speak them out in isolation. So for pizza, they should individually make phonetic sounds associated with each letter, i.e., p, i, z, z, a.
From the word, extract the ‘zz’ and ask your kid to form another word with it. A great way to do this is by asking them to pick a consonant, follow it with a vowel and then attach ZZ at the end. This way, kids get to be creative and make mistakes by forming words that may not have meanings which helps them gain confidence in the long run.
For example, F + U + ZZ forms fuzz. B + U + ZZ forms buzz. Once kids practice this daily, they will be able to pick up ZZ words with ease.
