mixed number is a combination of a whole number and a fraction. For example, 3 1/2 is a mixed number because it has a whole number part (3) and a fractional part (1/2). In this lesson, we will learn how to add and subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator.

o add mixed numbers with the same denominator, you simply add the fractions together and then add the whole numbers together. For example, if you have 2 3/4 + 1 1/4, you would add the fractions (3/4 + 1/4 = 4/4 = 1) and then add the whole numbers (2 + 1 = 3). The sum is therefore 3 1/4.

o subtract mixed numbers with the same denominator, you subtract the fractions and then subtract the whole numbers. For example, if you have 5 2/3 - 2 1/3, you would subtract the fractions (2/3 - 1/3 = 1/3) and then subtract the whole numbers (5 - 2 = 3). The difference is therefore 3 1/3.
