Decoding the CK Mystery
The K sound is tricky since it can be produced by any of the three – the letter C, K, or even the blend CK. It can be confusing enough for your child to learn the same sound using different letters, and understanding which blend to apply can be even more challenging. We are here to help you with some simple methods and quick tricks to get it right each time.
Building the CK Sound in Words
The rule is quite simple. At the end of the word, the K sound is likely produced only by the letter K or CK. It helps eliminate about a third of the confusion right away. There are a few exceptions, but let’s keep them away for now.
The sound CK always follows a short vowel sound. Look at the words duck, lack, peck, tick, and sock. They are all words that end with the CK blend. The vowel sound right before the blend is a short one. That’s how you know it appears.
Since there is only one rule to apply in CK blends, it is clear that getting familiar and comfortable with the blend is all about practice. If you can help your kids build on the concept using games and interaction, you will notice the learning becomes great fun.
Words from the Wise – CK Blends
While the rule may seem simplistic to use and relatively straightforward, it could take your child a while to get comfortable with it. There is no set grade when they will appreciate the concept. You will know when they are ready. Avoid pushing or pressuring them through the process.
SplashLearn helps you ace the CK test in style. Extensive practice and fun await as we bring you engaging games that your kids can work with for hours.
